Evolutionary stakeholder theory in action: Adaptation of public utility regulation in the post‐OPEC world.Karl A. McDermott - 2020 - Business and Society Review 125 (2):203-223.
This article extends the Humean example of evolutionary stakeholder theory introduced in Kline and McDermott (2019). In that article, it was established that the Cost of Service Regulation (COSR) rules created by regulatory commissions, courts, and legislation was an example of evolutionary stakeholder theory. Ultimately, the Supreme Court decision in the Hope Natural Gas case established that it was not the method, but the result reach that was important. If the result reach balanced the interests of stakeholders then the (...)

Episodic future thought and its relation to remembering: Evidence from ratings of subjective experience.Karl K. Szpunar & Kathleen B. McDermott - 2008 - Consciousness and Cognition 17 (1):330-334.
The goal of the present study was to examine the hypothesis that the ability to construct vivid mental images of the future involves sampling the contents of memory. In two experiments, participants envisioned future scenarios occurring in contextual settings that were represented in memory in varying degrees of perceptual detail. In both experiments, detailed contextual settings were associated with more detailed images of the future and a stronger subjective experience. Our findings suggest that the contents of memory are routinely sampled (...)

Evolutionary stakeholder theory and public utility regulation.William Kline & Karl McDermott - 2019 - Business and Society Review 124 (2):283-298.
Public utility regulation is one example of how stakeholder theory has actually evolved in practice. Through trial and error, court cases, statutory law and economic realities, stakeholder theory has its origins almost a century before R Edward Freeman published his seminal workStrategic Management: A Stakeholder Approach. This wealth of historical data is largely overlooked by the stakeholder literature. We will show in this article how the specific history of public utility regulation provides at least one answer to how stakeholder theory (...)

Individual differences in time perspective predict autonoetic experience.Kathleen M. Arnold, Kathleen B. McDermott & Karl K. Szpunar - 2011 - Consciousness and Cognition 20 (3):712-719.
Tulving posited that the capacity to remember is one facet of a more general capacity—autonoetic consciousness. Autonoetic consciousness was proposed to underlie the ability for “mental time travel” both into the past and into the future to envision potential future episodes . The current study examines whether individual differences can predict autonoetic experience. Specifically, the Zimbardo Time Perspective Inventory was administered to 133 undergraduate students, who also rated phenomenological experiences accompanying autobiographical remembering and episodic future thinking. Scores on two of (...)

    Karl Rahner on Two Infinities.John M. McDermott - 1988 - International Philosophical Quarterly 28 (4):439-457.
Although rahner originally maintained the validity of conceptual abstractions and the nonintelligibility of matter, Other works arguing from the ultimate unity of spirit in matter both in god, Their common origin and end, And in the essence of the soul, Led to the affirmation of a certain intelligibility of matter. Rahner's proof for god's existence, Based on the intellectual dynamism that transcends all finite realities, Concepts included, As it seeks fulfillment in the infinite, Is ambiguous. The Analogy of Knowing in Karl Rahner.John M. McDermott - 1996 - International Philosophical Quarterly 36 (2):201-216.
Being is simultaneously knowing and unknown, rooted in man's spirit-matter composition. The dynamic unity in diversity provides the fundamental _Schwebe (oscillation, tension) of thought. In it sensibility is one with and diverse from intellection. In intellection form is diverse from and identical with _esse. Being's grade of self-presence grounds objective analogy to which corresponds the subjective analogy of sensibility, abstraction, and judgment. These operations reflect the ways of affirmation, negation, and eminence. A unity in diversity exists among sensibility, abstraction, and (...)

Fixed-parameter tractability and completeness IV: On completeness for W[P] and PSPACE analogues.Karl A. Abrahamson, Rodney G. Downey & Michael R. Fellows - 1995 - Annals of Pure and Applied Logic 73 (3):235-276.
We describe new results in parametrized complexity theory. In particular, we prove a number of concrete hardness results for W[P], the top level of the hardness hierarchy introduced by Downey and Fellows in a series of earlier papers. We also study the parametrized complexity of analogues of PSPACE via certain natural problems concerning k-move games. Finally, we examine several aspects of the structural complexity of W [P] and related classes. For instance, we show that W[P] can be characterized in terms (...)

    Karl Rahner's Transcendental Christology.Mark F. Fischer - 2014 - Philosophy and Theology 26 (2):383-395.
Karl Rahner’s transcendental Christology examined the conditions for the possibility of faith in Christ and presented human nature as developing in response to God’s grace. This article affirms Rahner despite the critiques of Michel Henry, Roger Haight, John McDermott, Patrick Burke, and Donald Gelpi. Rahner’s Christology is not a phenomenology but a theology that affirms God’s presence in history. To be sure, some critics have attacked Rahner for emphasizing God’s initiative and diminishing human responsibility and for uncritically accepting (...)

Keeping the beat: Form meets function in the Chlamydomonas flagellum.Karl A. Johnson - 1995 - Bioessays 17 (10):847-854.
Recent studies in the green alga Chlamydomonas and other flagellated cells have revealed new insights into the relationships between the structure and function of the eukaryotic flagellum. These advances provide a basis from which a unified view can be constructed of how a flagellum operates. In addition, investigations of flagellar assembly offer new perspectives revealing the mechanisms used by cells to create these nanoscale structures. New developments in the molecular biology of Chlamydomonas provide powerful tools for the continued exploration of (...)

Kant's Reason: The Unity of Reason and the Limits of Comprehension in Kant.Karl Schafer - 2023 - Oxford: Oxford University Press.
Kant's Reason develops a novel interpretation of Kant’s conception of reason and its philosophical significance, focusing on two claims. First, it argues that Kant presents a powerful model for understanding the unity of theoretical and practical reason as two manifestations of a unified capacity for theoretical and practical understanding (or “comprehension”). This model allows us to do justice to the deep commonalities between theoretical and practical rationality, without reducing either to the other. In particular, through it, we see why the (...)

With respect to the topic of “powers and abilities,” most readers will associate David Hume with his multi-pronged critique of traditional attempts to make robust explanatory use of those notions in a philosophical or scientific context. But Hume’s own philosophy is also structured around the attribution to human beings of a variety of basic faculties or mental powers – such as the reason and the imagination, or the various powers involved in Hume’s account of im- pressions of reflection and the (...)

  42. Kant's theory of mind: an analysis of the paralogisms of pure reason.Karl Ameriks - 2000 - New York: Oxford University Press.
This seminal contribution to Kant studies, originally published in 1982, was the first to present a thorough survey and evaluation of Kant's theory of mind. Ameriks focuses on Kant's discussion of the Paralogisms in the Critique of Pure Reason, and examines how the themes raised there are treated in the rest of Kant's writings. Ameriks demonstrates that Kant developed a theory of mind that is much more rationalistic and defensible than most interpreters have allowed.
  43. The force of fictional discourse.Karl Bergman & Nils Franzen - 2022 - Synthese 200 (6).
Consider the opening sentence of Tolkien’s The Hobbit: In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. By writing this sentence, Tolkien is making a fictional statement. There are two influential views of the nature of such statements. On the pretense view, fictional discourse amounts to pretend assertions. Since the author is not really asserting, but merely pretending, a statement such as Tolkien’s is devoid of illocutionary force altogether. By contrast, on the alternative make-believe view, fictional discourse prescribes that (...)

In a triad of practice manuals collectively titled _The Process of Meditation_ (_Bhāvanākrama I, II, III_), the eight century Indian Buddhist philosopher Kamalaśīla singles out _vipaśyanā_ (insight meditation) to be of particular importance on the early stages of the Buddhist path. This paper provides a reconstruction of _vipaśyanā_ based on how it is depicted in that work. I make two primary claims. First, _vipaśyanā_ is a technique for facilitating the direct perceptual ascertainment of a select set of properties, and second, (...)
